2007/2008 Healthcare Commission Results

The Trust has achieved a disappointing set of results from the Healthcare Commission in relation to its internal functions.

The Healthcare Commission is the independent watchdog for healthcare in England. It assesses and reports on the quality and safety of services provided by the NHS and the independent healthcare sector, and works to improve services for patients and the public.

Despite the enormous effort by all the Trust's staff, the Healthcare Commission has found issues in relation to the service's financial management and use of resources which has lead it to give the service the second worst rating of any UK ambulance Trust this year.

The Healthcare Commission revealed that the "East Of England Ambulance Service NHS Trust has failed to demonstrate the existence of adequate arrangements for the management of its financial resources" and "this organisation did not meet the standard of having systems in place to reduce the risks relating to the use of medical devices such as needles and syringes".

It is important to add that whilst several development areas have been identified, non of them are likely to impact substantially on patient care. The areas requiring attention are primarily internal and therefore the general public's confidence in the service can be maintained.
